Even a parking place will be transformed into an improvised stage during the White Night
Visitors of the White Night Contemporary Culture Forum in Riga from 4th to 5th September will be able to savour different arts performances. The experimental electro-acoustic band Woodpecker Project with participation of the composer Andris Dzenītis and multi-instrumentalist Artūrs Gailis will perform for visitors of the forum.
Compositions of the musical partnership, though composed on a basis of previously created electronic material, each time surprise both listeners and musicians: the development of the emotional and thematic dimensions cannot be foreseen during the live show.
Band’s sound may seem unusual because of the aggressive sound and dynamic intensity that sometimes does not allow to determine what kind of music that is and where are its limits. Woodpecker Project’s participants Artūrs Gailis and Andris Dzenītis invite everybody from 20.00 to 21.00 to Domina Shopping Centre’s parking place that will transform into improvised stage to enjoy the sound vibrations performed by Woodpecker Project that you never experienced before.
The Woodpecker Project, which was founded in the summer of 2006, is an experimental electro-acoustic band, to whom any stylistic or esthetical limits are foreign: it unifies the technological and philosophical basics of modern academic music, the dynamic power of rock, the improvisations of modern jazz and aggressiveness of noise music.
Andris Dzenītis (Woodpecker Project - composition, electronica, keyboard, programming) is more known in Latvia as a composer of academic instrumental, choir and orchestra music. His works have gained awards at various international competitions, but in 2007 he got Latvia’s highest musical award – the Great Music Award (Lielā mūzikas balva). Still the other part of his musical interest is related to the possibilities of electronics and electro-acoustics. Being partly self-taught in this area, Andris Dzenītis is one of the pioneers in the field of electronica out of Latvia’s academic musicians. Composer’s interests span far beyond scientific research of the Western European academic electronics and continuous development of tembres, being more focused on harmony of the intuitive, psycho-acoustic and emotional moments in electronica, and currently being non-directly influenced by the sound of rock, noise and spectralism.
Artūrs Gailis (Woodpecker Project – electric guitar, improvisation, programming) is one of the new generation’s most promising musicians that mastered both violin and viola at Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Music Academy. Currently, he continues his studies at the Lithuanian Music Academy. Artūrs Gailis is a versatile musician: he participates in academic music projects, in the Collegium Musicum Riga and Sinfonietta Riga orchestras, performs as a guitar virtuoso with D11 Blues Band, as well as takes part in other projects.
This year the White Night Contemporary Culture Forum will offer nearly 50 large and small scale art projects. For visitors the admission to any of those projects is free.
